216 inmates escaped from Malir Jail
During the recent earthquake tremors in Karachi, 216 inmates escaped from Malir District Jail after breaching the prison walls. In the chaos, some prisoners overpowered guards, seized their weapons, and opened fire. One inmate was killed, five were injured, and three Frontier Corps personnel also sustained injuries.
The incident occurred when prisoners were temporarily moved out of their barracks due to the tremors. Taking advantage of the situation, a large number attempted to flee. Law enforcement agencies have since re-arrested 80 inmates from various locations, while nine suspects are currently in custody.
Sindh Prisons Minister, Ali Hassan Zardari, promptly took notice of the incident, ordering detailed reports from the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Prisons. He instructed authorities to seal off the surrounding area and ensure the immediate recapture of the escaped inmates. The minister also stressed that any officers found negligent will be held accountable.
DIG Prisons Hassan Sehto and SSP Malir Kashif Abbasi informed the media that the re-arrested prisoners have been placed in the lock-up at Sukhan Police Station for the time being.
