French Box Office Soars 19% in 2023, Reaching €1.3 Billion ($1.4 Billion)
In a robust cinematic year, the French box office witnessed a remarkable 19% surge in 2023, accumulating an estimated €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) from a total of 181.2 million tickets, as reported by Comscore France. Diverging from the previous year's trend, where the top 10 was exclusively dominated by U.S. films, 2023 showcased a dynamic blend of Hollywood blockbusters and French productions. Notably, "Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom," Pathé’s high-budget comedy adventure inspired by the iconic French comics, outperformed Christopher Nolan’s epic "Oppenheimer" from Universal in terms of ticket sales. Two other French films secured positions in the top 10: Studiocanal’s "Alibi.com 2," the second installment of Philippe Laucheau’s comedy series exploring themes of adultery, and Pathé’s "The Three Musketeers: d’Artagnan," the initial chapter of a two-part adventure saga based on Alexandre Dumas’ timeless novel. The top three highest-grossing films of 2023 in France comprised "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," the animated video game adaptation from Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo; Greta Gerwig’s "Barbie" from Warner Bros.; and James Cameron’s "Avatar: The Way of Water" from Disney and 20th Century Studios.
