Oscar Winner Daniel Kwan Takes On New Mission: Helping Rewrite Los Angeles’ City Charter
Oscar-winning filmmaker Daniel Kwan has taken up an unexpected passion project: contributing to the rewriting of Los Angeles’ City Charter. Known for co-directing the acclaimed film Everything Everywhere All at Once with Daniel Scheinert, Kwan is now channeling his energy into local civic activism.
Kwan is involved with Rewrite LA, a newly launched initiative aimed at ensuring that public participation, through community assemblies, digital feedback, and direct engagement, plays a meaningful role in shaping the city’s revised charter.
Speaking about his involvement, Kwan acknowledged that topics like city charters often fail to capture public interest. “When most people hear about this kind of stuff, their eyes glaze over,” he said. “But I wish that wasn’t the case because this charter affects everyone.”
Despite preparing a major Universal film slated for release on November 19, 2027, Kwan has carved out time for this civic endeavor, describing it as a deeply important cause that can influence the future of Los Angeles governance.
