Pakistan National in NSW Charged in Major Fraud Scheme Targeting Australians
A 21-year-old Pakistani national living in New South Wales has been charged in connection with a large-scale fraud scheme involving stolen personal financial information.
According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the individual allegedly used the stolen data to purchase hundreds of mobile devices, affecting more than 100 victims nationwide.
The investigation, led by the AFP's Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre in collaboration with Optus and TPG Telecom, was launched following reports of fraudulent calls from someone impersonating a telecommunications representative. Victims were reportedly deceived into sharing personal details, which were then used to acquire mobile phones and tablets. These devices were shipped overseas for resale.
A search of the suspect's residence in Auburn uncovered over $1 million in cash, more than 500 SIM cards, and 21 electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones containing credit cards and financial documents.
