Turkish Dramas Reshaping Youth Mindsets in Pakistan
In a groundbreaking research initiative led by Nadia Saleem and Saba Sadiq from the Virtual University of Pakistan, the cultural landscape of the nation takes center stage as the study investigates the influence of Turkish dramas on the youth demographic. Despite being a developing country with a rich and diverse cultural heritage, Pakistan faces challenges associated with cultural imperialism, notably the infusion of foreign content through satellite channels and cable TV. The research, conducted as a survey at Punjab University, specifically examines how Turkish dramas are shaping the mindsets of the country's youth, raising concerns about the potential dilution of Pakistan's unique cultural identity. Nadia Saleem and Saba Sadiq, both affiliated with the Virtual University of Pakistan, structured the research as a survey targeting students at Punjab University. Utilizing an Independent T-test to assess the impact based on gender, the findings brought to light a significant influence on female viewers, highlighting the gendered aspect of the cultural transformation. The results underscore the captivating portrayal of Turkish culture in these dramas, sparking interest among Pakistani youth and leading to noticeable shifts in their attitudes and lifestyles. The study contends that the influence of Turkish dramas, often influenced by Western living styles, is gradually permeating the cultural fabric of the country. Of particular significance is the revelation that dubbed Turkish dramas are playing a pivotal role in altering the mindset and lifestyle choices of the youth. The researchers stress the urgency of addressing this phenomenon to safeguard Pakistan's cultural identity, especially given the existing cultural invasion from the Indian drama industry. The analysis in the study focuses on viewers' perceptions towards dubbed Turkish dramas, providing valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of media consumption among the youth. As the Virtual University of Pakistan takes a leading role in uncovering the cultural shifts brought about by foreign influences, the research serves as a clarion call to protect and nurture the distinctive cultural identity of Pakistan's youth in the face of evolving global media dynamics.
