Korean Pop Music Pioneer Lee Mi-ja Receives Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit
At 82 years old, Korean music legend Lee Mi-ja has etched her name in history as the first pop musician to be honored with the prestigious Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit. Expressing her delight and overwhelming emotions, Lee shared her sentiments during a phone interview with The Dong-A Ilbo, following the announcement by Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. The Geumgwan Order of Culture Merit is the highest recognition bestowed by the government for outstanding contributions to pop culture and the arts. Debuting in 1959 with the timeless hit "Pure Love of a 19-Year-Old," Lee Mi-ja has left an indelible mark on Korea's pop music landscape. With a career spanning over six decades, she has become an iconic figure, beloved by generations and transcending cultural boundaries. Surpassing 2,500 songs in her repertoire, Lee's recognition as the second recipient in the pop culture category underscores her enduring influence and legacy in shaping the vibrant tapestry of Korean popular music.
